Jai Hind College achieves zero garbage
The Jai Hind College, Churchagte has taken the lead in recycling the garbage accumulated in the college premises, thus lending a helping hand to the BMC's ongoing drive for segregating wet and dry garbage's in the metropolis.

"It pains me that BMC spends crores of rupees on garbage disposal. Thus we at Jai-Hind College involving the staff and the students are just doing our bit to ensure that we do not put additional burden on the BMC authorities by dumping garbages", says Principal N W Shivdasani.

The campus has introduced segregation of garbage into dry and wet garbage and special dustbins are marked for the same. Prof. Shivdasani said that students are encouraged to throw materials like papers, plastics in dustbin indicating dry garbage whereas leftover of eatable are to be thrown in the dustbin indicating wet garbage. He said that the dry garbage is given to the rag pickers and the wet is made to manure by means of vermiculture. A vermiculture expert Pai was called to brief the staff of this project and seeing the enthusiasm the chemicals too were supplied to the college free.

When quizzed by the FPJ of the problems faced by the college for the implementation of this project, Prof. Shivdasani said that the college has a floating population where every year students pass out and new students come. The problem with the Indian society is, he regrets is that there is very low civil sense where throwing litter anywhere is very common. He makes it a point that in every college function, be it the orientation programmes for freshers or the various cultural programs celebrated throughout the year, the message of cleanliness is spread loud and clear. There are about 40 big dustbins in the two buildings of the college and that too at prominent places. The peons and the other staff people are given strict instructions to confiscate the I-cards of students found littering. Additional Municipal Commissioner Ratho has commended the college for this project and said that plans are underway to give incentives like reduction of property taxes to those who do not burden the municipal corporation with their garbage. He said that he would like to study the Jai-Hind model and replicate it in other colleges as well.
